Why?

Boxing sparring partners can be tough to find and boxing classes can be intimidating. Let’s be honest, boxing video games don’t provide any type of realism.

While the robot is fast (3+ punches per second) the low weight of the arms means that when it does punch you it doesn’t hurt. This means you can train over and over with little risk of injury.

What

The robot is based on the open-sourced software packaged called ROS (Robot Operating System). High power motors, durable custom foam, the latest depth camera from the company that created the technology behind the Microsoft Kinect, touch screen interface, Internet connectivity along with touch sensors and accelerometers combined together to create a rugged, fast capable robot with room to expand as software updates are made. Upgrades such as a mobile base will be able to be added later with ease due to it’s module design.

How

We’ve programmed the robot to mimic how professional boxers train for a fight but make it more accessible for novices. Combining AI (artificial intelligence) algorithms with motion capture we’ve been able to reproduce such boxing basics as the jab, cross, hook and unlike traditional training methods you can also record and playback your sparing session in full 3D environment. Did the robot land a punch on you? Go back and see what you did wrong. Instant feedback.

Motion sensors can be installed to make sure the robot remains focused, with switches in the gloves, head and torso keeping score of a round. It will be set it up like an arcade game with programmed boxing scenarios and different characters to train with and defeat, on you rise to power!
